[movies]Metroid - Time Attack by Jeff C. (aka Arc) - Jeff 'Arc' C.
[NB - this video was transferred from the Machinima collection, and uses different rules to the other speeds runs in this collection, including use of emulators and multiple save states.] Another example of the pre-history of machinima - players bragging about their impressive performances to other players. This roughly 17-minute run through the NES's Metroid demonstrates the fastest path through the game. Please note: These speedthroughs were played on an emulator, using game slow-down options a...

[movies]Super Mario World - Xbox emulated run in 0:10:47 - Andrew McKinlay - Andrew McKinlay
Speed run of Super Mario World done on xsnes9x Super Nintendo emulator for Xbox, does not count as official record for SMW. Author's comments: This run was extremely lucky in two areas, 1. That i didn't die by that stupid stump thing in the first castle. 2. That i didn't choke on that lame water level like i always do. I'm never going to play this game ever again, as I officially became a complete loser this summer having played this game waaaaaay too much...

[movies]Super Turrican (NES) - 15:10 (US version, emulated run) - Peter Bucher (aka. Exim)
A fast completion on Super Turrican - a game that is said to be extremely difficult, and a game that was entirely produced by one man. Actually quite impressive - upon closer inspection, the game doesn't look very easy, yet the player thrusts full speed through everything.

[movies]Pit Fighter (Genesis) - 06:31 (July 1991 version, emulated run) - Mário de Almeida Azevedo Junior (aka. FODA)
- Level 8 difficulty (hardest) - As fast as possible. - Absolutely no damage taken as it wouldn't speed up the process. - Doesn't take all powerups because they make you knock down enemies. It's desired that they stand up as much as possible. - Manages to get one of the chainmen to kill the other one, so there is less bonus afterwards (faster).

[movies]Wizards n Warriors (NES) - 10:53 (US version, emulated run) - Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh)
This is an improved version - 72 seconds faster than previously. Most of the improvement comes from heavy abuse of luck to get blue and pink potions when they are most useful. In this game you're an armor-clad knight with a big sword. You collect gems to bribe a red knight, kill evil beasts and rescue several "distressed damsels". Walker Boh completes the game shorter than anyone imagined, and discovered a few nice tricks / glitches...

This is another one of the "umphteenth version" movies. Cheez and WalkerBoh had a long competition at this game, but then Genisto came and beat them both by improving Walker's previous attempt by 1:54. The movie features very precise boomerang handling, a glitch to cut the boss-fights short and other tricks to keep it quick.

A very important part of Nintendo's history is being presented here in the manner of our website -- as a tool-assisted speedrun. Donkey Kong Junior, among with Donkey Kong, were classic games that were played by millions of players on different consoles, including NES, Atari 2600 and Game and Watch. Although one would not expect a movie of Donkey Kong Jr. to be interesting to watch, except in the retro sense, this movie is actually quite surprising...

The previous author (Morimoto) wasted some time before pressing start and before ending his movie, but even if not counting that, this movie is ~77 frames faster than the previous version. [movies]Donkey Kong (NES) - 01:18 (World version, emulated speedrun) - Phil Côté
Donkey Kong is a classic game that has been challenged plenty of times at this site, by many players. The author of this movie manipulates luck so that Mister Jumpman (who later became Mario) never needs to jump over, wait for, or otherwise evade deadly objects. Note: Previously, every attempt at this game had been rejected ― either because the movies had been imperfect or just because the game is too simple...

Here you see the next Olympic winner ;) Note that this movie seems to end abruptly. This is because the game repeats the same 8 events with more difficult goals, and the movie only does the first set. Selected notes from author: There are 3 purposes of this video: 1) To attempt to be 'perfect' in each event at least one time; 2) To show the major consequences of seemingly minor mistakes in play or strategy, e.g...

Trivia: This game was released as Probotector in Europe with slightly modified graphics. It is also known as GryZor on some other systems. It's the guy who has infinite supply of ammo and who destroys worlds bare-chested. Here we have Genisto again doing what nobody could have seen coming. [movies]Cobra Triangle (NES) - 17:55 (US version, emulated speedrun) - Hans Olsson (aka. Walker Boh)
This game is something as unusual as a boat game where you race to the finish, rescue swimmers from being abducted, dispose of bombs, kill big-ass sea monsters and shoot targets. This movie aims for fastest time but makes some deviances from that goal to get more points: for example it saves all the swimmers where just saving one would have been slightly faster.

This video plays the longest path of the game having only two bosses. The boss levels are quite long in this movie - they can't really be sped up, but the author of the movie has done his best to make it worth watching. No frogs were harmed in the making of this movie.

I use normal to avoid violating the no-passwords rule, and because the higher difficulties require more hack-and-slash and I think would make for less entertaining runs.
